If you have never been to Chicago, my heart goes out to you. This city is one of the culinary meccas of the United States, if not the world, with a collection of old-world flavors interpreted by young and innovative chefs, cooks, and culinarians.
Chi-town’s take on one of America’s staple junk food classics, the hot dog, is a great example.
Experiencing a Chicago hot dog can be exceptional in and of itself, taking you on a journey of hot and cold, crisp and soft, sweet and savory all at once.
The Hot Dog Box in the Bronzeville area of Chicago is serving up some of the best. I tried the classic Chicago style hot dog, a delicious Vienna all beef skinless beauty topped with yellow mustard, bright green relish, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and finally, a dash of celery salt to give it that last bit of unique flavor to make your taste buds jump for joy.
No, I was not basic and ask for ketchup. I ate it as is like a true native. I understand a true connoisseur of the Chicago dog would NEVER add ketchup, so I wanted to respect that. (LOW KEY, I WANTED TO ADD KETCHUP).
The stand is an adorable perfect square container box that can’t be missed as it is a red stop sign with bright lettering. The owner, Bobby Morelli and his young daughter, Brooklyn, opened The Hot Dog Box in August 2020 because he was tired of corporate America’s volatile nature. Couple that with pandemic-related challenges and now the stand is a local favorite and tourist sensation.
I loved each dog. When you come, and you should definitely come, ask them to warm your bun up before preparing the hot dog to take the experience to an entirely different level. If you are into gourmet, get their filet mignon hot dog. This baby was juicy, meaty, and delicious. They also have non red meat and even vegan options.
You can visit them at 332 E 51st St, Chicago, IL 60615 or give them a call at (708) 730-4379.
