The Los Angeles Black food scene was a true roller coaster for our team during our week out west. As we made our way back to Miami, we couldn’t help reflecting on LA’s ups and downs and unforgettable dining experiences.
One of our most memorable and pleasant was brunch at Poppy + Rose located at 765 Wall St, Los Angeles, CA 90014. The space was bright and vibrant with a very intentional menu with flat out superstars, and service that was pleasant and quick.
Our first selection was the Biscuit + Gravy with 2 eggs (I had mine scrambled soft), house buttermilk biscuit, pork sausage gravy (mushroom gravy’s also available) and a mixed green salad. I had no idea why the salad was there, but hey, if you give it, I’ll eat it. The soft, fluffy biscuits were in the fashion of Angel Biscuits but not as dense with a welcoming buttery flavor that interacted beautifully with the savory and hearty gravy with drippings from the Pulled Pork Hash, our next entree.
THIS HASH WAS A SHOW STOPPER. Its rich, meaty flavors merged with simple and familiar ingredients that were nostalgic and comforting. The dish included brick hash browns, BBQ pulled pork, two eggs, arugula, and creme fraiche. Get the eggs sunny side up so the yoke can have your taste buds in a tasty choke hold as you devour the hash’s ingredients together.
The tender pork was packed with flavor and their inhouse made sauce hit all the right crave-worthy points! The sauce had the ubiquitous tomato base paste supported with a slight vinegary base, followed by welcomed spices of what were likely mustard and black pepper. The dish was blessed with a sweetened parting gift of molasses. The buttery, crispy hash browns were slated to perfection and so good I could have eaten them solo. This entrée is a must have if you visit LA.
The folks next to us were having the Chicken and Waffle, and I was immediately envious because the enticing aroma filled our section with scents of vanilla and herbs and spices. I can’t wait to come back and try their other entrees.
We give this space a solid 5 out of 5 stars! You can call them at (213) 995-7799 or visit them online at poppyandrose.com.
