In the kaleidoscope of America’s dynamic restaurant and bar scenes, my hometown of Miami, FL, often takes the lead, consistently ranking as the number one city for bar hopping in the United States. However, the nuances of how each city celebrates its bar culture are profoundly influenced by the intricate dynamics of race, creating distinct experiences across the nation. While articles abound showcasing the most notable bars, the spotlight rarely extends to those within Black communities—a disparity that warrants examination.
Du Bois’ concept of twoness, navigating the duality of being both an American and Black, persists, manifesting in the food and beverage space. Yet, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. The recent historic triumphs of the Detroit Lions over the Rams and the Buccaneers drew thousands of tourists to the city, seeking places to socialize and indulge in libations before and after the games. Detroit emerges as a beacon of pride, boasting the highest number of Black-owned bars in the United States.
While detractors may downplay Detroit’s aesthetics, the city’s vibrant Black bar scene tells a different story. From historic establishments to chic, craft cocktail-driven spaces, Detroit offers an unparalleled experience, inviting patrons from all walks of life to revel in its diverse cocktail programs and, in many cases, indulge in menus reminiscent of Thanksgiving feasts.

#3 Teresa’s Place
14000 W McNichols Rd, Detroit, MI 48235
Phone: (313) 862-2884
Teresa’s is a true Detroit jewel, as attested by patrons seeking an evening of good food, strong drinks, and a vibrant atmosphere. A massive local favorite, this bar has become the spot for pre and post gaming for whatever your plans are. Teresa’s stands out as a welcoming vibe, drawing a mixed-aged, mature crowd, predominantly older with a sprinkle of those in their 30s. The atmosphere is a key element, creating a pleasant environment. I personally enjoyed the turkey chops, collard greens, and delicious mac and cheese. The chicken salad was also tasty, but I hope they can use romaine rather than the iceberg lettuce, but it was delicious, nonetheless. The catfish and Mac at Teresa’s receive special acclaim—from most diners, so I would probably make that your first meal here. The drinks, served with big freehand pours, are celebrated for their strength. The attentive bartenders, even during busier periods, contribute to a positive experience. Parking at Teresa’s comes with a $5 charge for the small lot, but free street parking is available with some considerations for neighboring houses. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, and fellas, this spot out of them all had the most YAMS, that were delicious.

Flood’s, a perennial favorite, has become synonymous with great times, delicious food, and vibrant entertainment. The multifaceted experience is heightened by the expert mixology skills of bartender Ray, whose engaging personality and top-notch customer service add a special touch to every visit. The musical journey is curated by DJ Reggie Jamar, crafting an atmosphere that caters to diverse tastes, blending urban, R&B, old school, and hustle seamlessly. Over the course of thirty years, Flood’s has maintained its magnetic vibe, drawing patrons in with its amazing food and diverse musical playlist. The management, including the beloved Tia, contributes to the welcoming environment, and the security team adds to the overall cool vibe, making it a highly recommended spot. A true shining star of Detroit’s culinary and bar scene, Floods has become an institution. The warmth and professionalism of the staff, exemplified by the exceptional service I experienced and the Thanksgiving Day quality menu, and, of course, the ultra-strong drinks, are reasons why this space would land the #1 or #2 spot. It is my favorite bar in the city personally, outside of my guilty pleasure favorite space, Club Celebrity, which, unfortunately, did not make the Top 10 list.
#1 Sky Bar & Grill
15350 Fenkell Ave, Detroit, MI 48227
Phone: (313) 539-5233
Sky Bar & Grill, voted as the number one black-owned bar in Detroit, is a class act in a developing neighborhood, offering a unique and lively atmosphere. The owner’s personal touch adds to the welcoming vibe, making patrons feel appreciated even on crowded nights. Despite its location in a rougher neighborhood, the establishment is lauded for creating a sense of safety. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or just out for a good time, Sky Bar & Grill delivers. The ambiance is very rustic and not as polished as some of the more swanky and modern bars, but what it lacks in aesthetics, it makes up in vibe and fun! This space is a 30 and up crowd and is positioned not far from major roads, drawing crowds, especially on Sundays. The blend of good music, great drinks, and top-tier security creates an environment that stands out.
Sky Bar & Grill caters to diverse tastes, with 70s and 80s soulful music setting the tone on some nights. Fridays bring in an older crowd with a great vibe, and the exceptional bartenders ensure a delightful experience. Pre-wedding celebrations and casual outings are met with a blast of fun and enjoyment. The Sunday atmosphere is hype, drawing an older crowd with the DJ spinning 80s hip-hop and R&B. Although the staff might seem a bit overwhelmed on busy nights, the overall experience remains positive. The unexpected delight is the quality of the food, with dishes like grilled and fried turkey chops, sautéed spinach, and grilled salmon earned praises from diners. The crowd at Sky Bar & Grill is diverse but skews towards a mature audience, creating a grown and sophisticated atmosphere. Lasty, THE DANCE IN HERE! So, if you are someone who wants to cut a rug, this is truly a spot to let your hair down and enjoy strong drinks, watch the game, and socialize in this thriving community hub. Congratulations to Sky Bar for being voted the number one spot.
This is a great list. Do you think you will do another list for the east side and downtown ?
