Ladies and gentlemen, gather ’round as we embark on a culinary voyage that took us to the vibrant heart of Atlanta. Make sure you follow us, @thehungryblackman for more amazing Black owned eats in your city, and around the country. The mission: to unearth the hidden gems among the Black-owned restaurants of 2023. But here’s the twist, we weren’t headed for the usual hotspots in downtown Atlanta; we ventured to the outskirts, where the lines between Atlanta and its peripheries blur into a delicious haze. And let me tell you, that decision was nothing short of brilliant.
Our first port of call on this epicurean adventure was Southern Fusion, formerly known as Heaven Cafe, nestled at 656 Peeksville Rd, Locust Grove, GA 30248. The menu, my friends, was nothing short of a revelation. It was a gastronomic journey that blended the comforting embrace of grandma’s kitchen with the refined finesse of a seasoned chef, delivering an experience that lingered on the palate, beckoning for an encore.
Our gastronomic odyssey set sail with the salmon croquettes, grits, breakfast potatoes, and a side of bacon. Ah, that bacon! It bore a beautiful rub, a prelude to a seductive umami flavor that unfolded with every chew, leading to a crescendo of thick-cut, tender, meaty perfection, redolent of BBQ smokehouse charm, kissed by a hint of brown sugar. The bacon, my friends, was nothing short of a revelation.
The grits, oh, those buttery, precisely salted grits! They catered to both the salt-sensitive souls and those, like me, who crave well-seasoned delights. I fashioned a breakfast masterpiece by crowning my salmon croquette with these delectable grits—a culinary symphony that transported me to bliss with every bite. The salmon croquette itself danced on the taste buds, perfectly fried, whispering of softened onions and bell peppers, married to a well-seasoned, flaky, and tender salmon, an ode to seafood elegance with a tantalizing undercurrent of smokiness. And the breakfast potatoes? A triumph! Crisp exterior, bursting with flavor within—these are not to be missed.
But our gastronomic journey was far from over. Pancakes and cinnamon rolls beckoned, and I was powerless to resist. The pancake, thin yet robust, offered a soft and fluffy canvas, a siren’s call to the liberally poured syrup, a testament to American griddle artistry.
The cinnamon roll, fresh from the oven, anointed with pecans, was an indulgence that defied earthly description. It was the very essence of cinnamon-scented divinity. And the biscuit? An angelic creation, buttery, soft, fluffy—a revelation on its own, especially when paired with their irresistible jelly.
Our eggs, scrambled to velvety perfection as per our request, sang of butter, salt, and pepper—a harmonious trio for our discerning palates.
As for the breakfast sandwich, it trod the path of the ordinary, and I’d wager my culinary currency on their signature breakfast offerings any day. Southern Fusion, my friends, might very well be Metro Atlanta’s breakfast beacon. A resounding 5 out of 5 stars is their due. Reach out to them at (678) 272-8688, and let the flavors of Atlanta’s finest breakfast destination envelop your senses. They also have a second location at 1820 Noahs Ark Rd Ste. 101, Jonesboro, GA 30236 with that location’s phone number at (678) 519-4756.
