NEW ORLEANS, LA – Our team went to New Orleans to try to eat at every Black owned restaurant in the city. We almost accomplished our task but detoured slightly to Baton Rouge and fell in love with their Black food scene.
The deliciousness at Stuph’D Beignets & Burgers located at 3325 St Claude Ave, New Orleans, LA 70117 had us doubling back to NOLA.
In past visits to NOLA, pre-Katrina, I’ve eaten beignets all over the city, but never any quite like this. Beignets are a doughy deep-fried pastry-type fritter that can be savory or sweet and New Orleans is known for some of the nation’s most delicious beignets.
What a pleasure for our team to discover this Black woman owned space that not only made beignets from scratch but stuffed them with savory fillings such as Philly cheesesteak, lobster, shrimp, pepperoni and cheese, and an array of fresh veggies. Her confection-filled beignets included cheesecake, jellies, fruit compotes, and even pecan pie!
My favorite was the cheesesteak and the grilled shrimp with added crab meat stuffed. The sweet options are almost doughnut like, filled with a house made fresh berry compote. The lemonades are also stars, especially if you get a savory beignet. That paring is magical. My top two favorite lemonades were the strawberry cucumber and berry.
As a tourist and food citric, this spot would be my top choice to satisfy a beignet craving. Café du Monde and Café Beignet off Royal are good, but the special something going on with her fillings makes it’s safe to crown Stuph’d the best beignets in NOLA. Plus, the service was pleasant and very southern hospitality centered.
Stuph’D Beignets & Burgers is truly emblematic of what makes NOLA cuisine one of the most celebrated in the world. When you eat here, you’ll see why. You can visit them at or call (504) 459-4571
