Broward County’s Black food scene is slowly beginning to see signs of life. With the development of Sistrunk in Fort Lauderdale, Dania Beach, and even Lauderhill, there are cool concepts on the horizon that I am looking forward to visiting.
Wimbos Crazy Potato is nothing short of delicious. I first learned of this brand when it was a food truck that travelled to popular festivals. When I found out they had opened an actual eatery, I had to make my way over there.
Our experience was incredible. I ordered several potatoes and a couple of desserts. The pound cake was so good I drove back to buy another one before I even reached the highway. All the potatoes are massive and smoked on the grill, then topped with outstanding creations and their homemade garlic butter.
The owner ran a rib stand prior to getting into the potato business and you can tell with the bold and smoky flavor meshed with a Carolina Gold BBQ sauce smothered over the impeccably seasoned rib tips. Fittingly, my first potato was the BBQ ribs loaded potato. The ribs were the star of the show, and of course the potato was soft, moist and fresh.
I devoured the tasty toppings and had a lot of potato left, which great because after adding a little salt and butter, going in on the fluffy, snowy-white potato flesh was another delicious experience. When a potato is combined with salt and fat, it transforms into one of earth’s culinary joys.
Next we had the shrimp, broccoli and steak potato, which should be called the “surf and turf” potato. This dish included perfectly sautéed shrimp and strips of seasoned steak married with their house made garlic butter. On this potato, I would ask for MORE garlic butter because it’s incredible on that broccoli.
We stayed on the seafood vibe and ordered the Seafood Potato that includes lobster, shrimp, and imitation crab meat, which I’ll likely substitute for chicken or steak on my next visit. The flavor was good, also enhanced by the garlic butter. The entire potato was tasty, but the shrimp and lobster were seasoned so delectably that the imitation crab took away from their flavor.
After our potatoes, I had their tasty dessert options and now I need to track down the baker. The pound cake is not playing games with nobody. Classically splendid in every way imaginable, this pound cake embodies the Southern charm of a classic Bundt mold cake with an addictive coat of icing that I scooped up using the organic spoon called my finger and went to town.
Wimbos is now one of my go to spots when I am super hungry because the potato is very filling. I told a friend about the place, and after her visit, she swears the cheeseburger potato tastes like Johnny Rockets had a baby with Idaho. Yeah, I’ll be trying that next time. Visit them at 748 NW 22nd Rd #2nd Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311 or 1166 N State Rd 7, Lauderhill, FL 33313 or call them at (954) 616-8854.
