The Hungry Black Man team has traveled to nine U.S. cities in search of amazing food! We focus on Black and minority owned eateries along with non-minority owned eateries who celebrate diversity with their hiring and service models. We have discovered that Black and Brown eateries must work ten times harder to be successful and respected. That extra work usually requires additional human and liquid capital. Because of this, many of these businesses find it challenging to compete. In addition, many of these food service businesses report being judged more harshly when things are not right. People take to Yelp and other digital platforms and blast them for food quality, air quality, aesthetics, customer service, and just about everything under the sun.
Often, addressing many issues within the Black Food ecosystem is difficult due to a lack of capital. To celebrate Thanksgiving, The Hungry Black Man is launching an initiative to support the ONLY Black Owned full service grocer, while also assisting Black Farmers. Coined The George Washington Carver Project, this initiative seeks to attract folk to shop at Stiles Farmer’s Market for ALL your Thanksgiving needs. This will allow the ONLY BLACK OWNED FULL SERVICE GROCERY STORE IN FLORIDA to sell more of their products – which are sourced from BLACK OWNED FARMS – this holiday season, allowing them to expand.
It’s that simple.
To participate, The Hungry Black Man and our supporters are asking you to sign up on Facebook at The George Washington Carver Initiative to support Black Farmers and this sole Black Grocer. Frenly Farmer’s Market! South Florida’s Largest Black Owned Grocer! 6330 W Oakland Park Blvd, Lauderhill, FL 33313. Spend those Irma stamps! Call (954) 289-8111. The grocer has agreed to provide a generous 10% off your total bill to show his gratitude. Guys, if we support this brother, he can improve his store, continue sourcing and being a buyer from Black Farms, which will assist our efforts in removing food deserts from our inner cities. Our communities deserve a clean, well stocked, and nutritious store whose products give black farmers and other makers a chance to compete. Located in a predominately Black community, Stiles already offers amazingly low prices on produce, so saving an additional 10% is a great deal!
I am asking the following organization to commit this Thanksgiving to shop at Stile’s Market for your Thanksgiving needs beginning November 15, 2017 through November 26, 2017.
Houses of Worship (We have so many churches with black congregations in South Florida, let’s do this)
